A really top notch "how to" article. Unfortunately a lot of his math is a little off. Not enough to prevent the engine from running, but better design info would help. Unfortunately my computer has been down for the past several days and so I didn't catch this early on.

If you want to build your own engine from scratch, get a copy of Vol. I of Audels Engineers and Mechanics Guide by Frank D. Graham, any edition. It covers, in language that any steamboater can handle, the design criteria, including creation and use of a valve events diagram. Don't know if it's available yet from Google Books, but it is available online from many bookstores.
