This is a film done in 1929 recording the opening of the lock system on the Ohio River. There are numerous stern wheelers & many smaller craft in the background. It is interesting that among all of the river boats there is not one with the crown top on the stacks. Was that a Mississippi thing or a creation of the illustrator of the Mark Twain books?

What a great movie! That is a bit of a puzzle on the stack crown.

Watching that reminded me of the old movie "Steamboat round' the bend" with Will Rogers. It's only available through Amazon, Ebay etc, it's a great movie about Mississippi river boats. They have a race between about ten of them, which would be very expensive to recreate that today. That movie was made only six years after the one posted above and some of those boats are probably in it.

Great post!

Thank you!

There's Buster Keaton film... "Steamboat Bill Jr." that has some "real" steamboats in it
