Yes,the boxes contain oil, which is fed to the copper tubes by wicks. They lubricate piston rods, valve rods, crossheads, crosshead guides and connecting rods.As for simpling,I was told by the previous owner that the brass valve on top of the block was the throttle, but I thought it may be a simpling valve. The steam orifice is quite small. The seller saw the engine running when he was a kid,now he's pushing eighty and may have disremembered a thing or two.Steamboat Jack is familiar with these machines and may be able to educate us. I think you might mean "misremembered", "disremembered" would mean he forgot completely.mike stacey wrote: disremembered a thing or two.

Disremembered is a new word I just made up;it means all memories are gone, only to be replaced by"alternate facts" Mike

Re: Savery 32
I'm thinking about selling my two steam engines to fund other projects. The problem is setting a value on them. Most of the ads in the "for sale/trade"are links to ebay, etc which have all expired,so no research there.Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks Mike

Ebay prices can be extremely high, or extremely low... most of the online purveyors of used engines such as Elliot bay and Preston Services are quite high IMO

Yes,I thought that might be the case,Elliot Bay in particular. They had an American engine about the same size as mine, requiring rebuild, for 25000.Ouch!It would be nice to get that kind of cash! Thanks

On ebay you can search "completed auctions", and see the actual prices engines have brought.
