July 2013 Nockamixon Meet

Post by fredrosse » Tue Jul 16, 2013 6:13 am

Gathering of several boats, including Don's newest, just getting sorted out. Margaret S fitted out with twin tops, new articulated wheels, and a pirate cannon for the 4th of July.

Hi Fred,

Nice pics, the Margaret S is looking great!

Where did you get the signal cannon? I've been looking around and they are either too small, too big, or not intended to be fired. Yours looks about right.

0.75 inch bore, 11 inches long. A very good sound can be gotten with about 75 grains od FFFFG black powder. I nerrly burned up the Margaret S. last year when the cannon (stray fuse) lit a fire in the forward hold, where a full pound of powder was stored, but that is another story!

Brass cannons are available several places, check out the suppliers in the "Mystic Wooden Boat Show" thread here. There were a couple of offers there.

Fred,

Yep that can be very dangerous

I went ahead and ordered one from Dixie Gun Works. It's probably too big, we'll see. I'll have to bore it and make a yoke for it, and they suggest a seamless steel liner with a 1" ID. The barrel is about 17" long. If it doesn't work I'll put it in the living room, something else to dust and vacuum around.

Sorry, had family in town and could not get time to post. We had 6 boats at Nockamixon this past weekend and 2 of them were their for the first time. Jared Shoenly who helps run Cabin Fever Expo had his new boat which is currently unamed. My father and I also had our Elliot Bay at the meet. Second time on water and she ran well with minor problems. She is 23 foot Elliot Bay hull, 20 x 30 prop, a code 28 sq ft ( 10 HP ) VFT boiler from Rappahanock Boat Works and a Pearl Twin. just some noisy pump issues was the bulk of our days troubles. I forgot my camera and did not have a good charge on phone so pictures are courtesy of others. By the way Phoebe Snow is named after the character created to promote the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad and its use of anthracite.
