Bearings !

Just how tolerant are our big ends? The HP little end overheated last season and there was a dry squeak from the HP area. Opened the little end, black crud burnt on the shells and spindle. Very delicate scrape and polished of surfaces by hand. Seemed smooth, solid and free turning. Big end only cont...

Re: separating a very reluctant flanged joint

Eventually supported the boiler from above the flange joint, the weight of most of the boiler hanging. Replaced all the nuts to exactly the stud height and using a lead hammer and a lead sheet hit the nuts/studs hard in rotation. Did not damage the studs. Now resealed with a copper gasket and foliat...

separating a very reluctant flanged joint

Help; I have to inspect the inside of my boiler. It is a central vertical steel drum, 6" diameter, with a " top hat " steam chest. There are multiple copper tubes into/out from the steel drum (32 ?). The safety valves, steam take off, water inflow pipe and and the blowdown pipe form a cross. They ar...

Re: Knocking ??

irregular Knocking solved I think! It seemed to come from the condenser. Discharge pipe straight from the L.P. to condenser ( the preheater was collapsed inside so cut it off which might have started the problem) . Added a 'dibber' pipe to suck from the lowest part of the condenser and serviced the ...

Re: Cylinder head gasket material ?

Brown paper and "Steamseal", foliac graphite and manganese seems to work very well on all my steam bits. w.p. 150psi

boiler tested to 250psi hydraulic.

Usually cut them out with a ball pean hammer and the odd ball bearing (for cutting holes)

Very simple.

Re: Knocking ??

could water hammer in the condenser be a cause for this knocking?l; It is not consistent and does not seem to relate to engine revolutions per se. There is also the odd engine squeak and a stethescope will be needed there. I am injecting oil into the wick oilers and it seems to go somewhere. The onl...

Knocking ??

18ft 6in wooden hull, Stuart Turner 6A fairly standard build. After a day's running two weeks ago and half of today the boat started to make the occasional knock sound, sometimes sounded like it was something attached to the prop knocking on the hull and other times rather more, I hesitate to say "m...

Re: altering my fuel type

Sorry to be stupid, but why the difference in potential "carbon" production ? Agree very interesting post, Thank you. I understood that a problem with oil burning in small boilers is often not enough height in the combustion chamber for complete burning and that angling the flame so it forms a swirl...

Re: altering my fuel type

Dietrich, Thank you. Looks interesting, paraffin, kerosene, home heating oil? and whose field kitchen ? AND how much ? Practical points: does it go/ blow out and reignite easily . The door into the fire box is at the moment directed forward around the front of the boiler from where one sit. If one c...

altering my fuel type

I have an Ofeldts type of boiler that is propane fired. As soon as one waves a gas bottle on a boat in the UK everyone trembles at the knees. Any firm views on changing to some form of oil firing, lune valley burner, "primus" like burner, pot burner, or solid fuel burning would be welcome ? (I did e...
