I think there is a rubber seal around the plunger and I don't think it is designed for high temps.

Re: MAN F6V35 WWI U-Boat Engine
The Atlas Imperial in my boat idles at 80 rpm and is full out at 325 rpm directly coupled to the screw. Any more these days any oil fired engine turning under 1000rpm is considered slow!! All the old thermodynamics and engine books I have call 1-100 rpm slow, 100-500 medium, and 500-1000 rpm ...

Re: Ducted propellers?
So Paul,
Does the duct turn with the rudder or are they separate? How much of a gain did you get with the duct vs with out?

Re: Navy WWII wheel
Bart, Yes the spindles do screw into the base on my wheel and can be removed. As you can see I have to manufacture one replacement handle (the wooden part) as someone removed that one so they would know where rudder amidships was. I had to reset the indicator as it was way off. The telegraph is fun ...

Re: Navy WWII wheel
Bart,
Looks very similar to the wheel in my boat the Arc (actually ARCTURUS, but I like the nick name). Here's a picture of the wheel house. The wheel is mated to a rudder indicator all solid brass, made in Seattle, Wa. same year as the boat 1929.

Re: Ducted propellers?
Quintin, I'm not sure I agree that Kitchen rudders are ineffiecent, but I digress, Kort nozels do make quite a difference in tractive effort and are popular on tug boats. I'm not sure how much gain it would supply to a small propeller on a steam launch however. Give it a try and record your results,...

Re: Ducted propellers?
Quinten, The launch I am designing will use a Kitchen or Kitchner rudder. Basically a adjustable duct to allow directional thrust and reversing with out reversing the engine. Such rudders allow speed control, reversing and the ability to spin the boat on it's axis instantly. I wonder why they never ...
