Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

It's back to the engine after christmas. The drain cock system is fitted and plumbed in so the next job is to make the lubricator and design a linkage for it. I am currently looking at using the valve spindle as the driving force for the lubricator but any suggestions you guys have would be grateful...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

Thank you for the photos and info. As far as the drain cock manifold is concerned here are a couple of photos as it is today. Essentially it is a piece of 7/8" square brass with a 10 mm stainless steel rod through a reamed hole. A bit fiddly to make to get an accurate fit and line everything up. Sti...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

We have spent quite a bit of time getting equal valve travels by machining a few thou off the back of the valve suspension, measuring then remachining until we got the right result and it now runs really well on air. The next task is to run it on steam and I am making a 4 way drain manifold system s...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

Thanks Guys, I have optimised the engine for clockwise rotation when sitting at the back. Another point, the photo posted of a propeller shows the engine with a flywheel. Should my compound have a flywheel? As you will have seen from my initial photographs there is not enough length on the crankshaf...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

Thanks guys, I just want to make sure we set this engine up in the best possible way. There is not much difference between one direction and the other but with locomotives we always optimise the forward direction.

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

We are now beginning to finalise the valve timing and there are minor differences between the clockwise and anti clockwise operation. As we want to optimise the forward running can someone please tell me which way the propeller turns? If I am sitting in the back of the boat and look at the prop shaf...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

The large laps are giving me an early cutoff at about 50% when I would expect to run at 75% cutoff, however we tried the engine with the original slack piston valves and it runs. I will play around with reducing the lap to alter the cutoff to try and obtain the best events and then machine the new v...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

Thank you Jack. Yes the links are the same on both cylinders. I can now start machining the valves knowing what I am trying to achieve without doubting the info on the drawings.
I will let you know how I get on.

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

I have now obtained copies of all of the drawings and have spoken to Hugh Mothersole which has cleared up several of my questions. However the question of the differences in the laps on the HP and LP piston valves remains unresolved. We are going to modify the existing piston valves by turning the h...

Re: Gordon Cheape Compound

I had a really good meeting yesterday, at the Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition, with the guys from the Steam Boat Association and met a chap who can contact Hugh Mothersol for me. Maybe there is a chance that I can get hold of the drawings after all. I also bought a book from the SBA in which w...
