Re: leaking tubes fire tube boiler.

I suggest re-rolling the fire tubes yourself. With the boiler on its side on a pallet, that process becomes relatively easy to do. Are they leaking at the top tube sheet or the bottom tube sheet? Of course, a thorough survey of the boiler condition should be done first, in case something more egregi...

Re: steam oil question

Yes. Higher pressure and super heat would definitely need some lube oil. But then... The hot well would need to be enlarged to accommodate oil removal, and that requires new engine/boiler mounts, and... I may as well build a different launch. I recognize that this steam launch has historic value as ...

Re: steam oil question

My 1960s vintage Blackstaffe steeple compound engine is condensate lubed, and I've never heard it groan.
Max operating pressure is close to 100 psi.

I must not be steaming it often enough...

Pete:
These photos are not directly side on, but might help.
The prop is on a layout board I made to finish the propellor, and the circle lines are 1" apart. (2.54 cm for most of the world.)

Kelly:
I like that weed-cutting solution! Simplicity at work.
I am now inspired to add a similar weed cutter to my boats' prop.
Thanks for sharing.

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

Thanks, Bart. Good suggestions. I will first raise the safety valve pop pressures from 100/105 psi to 120/125 psi. I'm concerned higher pressures might not be good for the compound slide valve, especially with condensate lubrication. I don't have data on maximums I can approach. We'll see next year....

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

Dietrich: I agree the valve chest pressure would provide instructive information. I have not plumbed it for measurements. Of course, the one compound slide valve creates some challenges of WHERE to tap for the pressure readings, as there are multiple pressure chambers involved. At this time I am con...

Sadly, the formatting of the data columns disappeared! But I trust you can reconstruct the story. Mental... Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

I finally can provide performance data for the two different propellers tested on my Steam Launch. The discussion below summarizes the test results. Some comments: - The "Notes" data column refers to direction of the test run: North or South. - The calculated hull speed of my 17 foot long hull is cl...
