Re: Potential Steamboats Queen Mary Lifeboats
Quote: "I had seen video of a converted lifeboat in Indiana/Michigan on YouTube ages ago" Could have been the late Tom Stockton's boat the ''Arbor queen'', but a guy in Ohio has it now. There are four or five converted life boats in Michigan, I went to one meet in Michigan there were three or four, ...

Re: A Funny Looking Slide Valve
"unbalanced slide valves are hard on valve guides''
Equally important is the centerline of the valve rod should be as close as practical to the plane of the cylinder face. This imposes a more a linear force between the two rather than a tendency to rock the valve on it's ends.

Re: A Funny Looking Slide Valve
Slide valves go back further than that. Rocket built in 1829 had them. They have their advantages, they'll put up with more abuse, lower maintenance. The big one is their ability to lift off the face in a carry over event. When running a hotwell the water is more tightly managed. For operators manua...

Re: Better Piston Rings
The old adage:
Slide valves wear in
Piston valves wear out
A piston valve in good fit is far more efficient though. A slide valve with 5 square inches of face at 250 psi has 1250 pounds of force exerting on it, quite a loss in horsepower.

Re: Upscaling a Hasbrouck engine
I ordered a set of plans for the Hasbrouck #10 engine from Ray back around 1981? They were like $7 and they came with a photograph of a completed engine and a letter from Ray thanking me for the purchase and to please send progress pictures. Never built. Still have the packet somewhere. Found his ad...
