Re: Help identify

Wesley, a good point in identifying Herreshoff engines is that the cylinder on this size engine screwed into the frame. On top of the platform would be a hotwell/airpump, along the lines of this Herreshoff drawing. http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad134/Johnlanark/Herreshoff%20engine/Hotwell10004_...

The cylinder patternmaker's layout board, by my good friend Dan Mackay. http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad134/Johnlanark/Herreshoff%20engine/layoutboard_zps0e4add02.jpg There is a lot going on in the cores. Most are made. Here is the external cylinder main pattern. http://i929.photobucket.com/alb...

Re: John's Herreshoff Style Engine

Hi Wesley, thanks for your interest. Life has got in the way, particularly restoring an old wooden yacht, and there is little to report. I hope to get back to it. Here is the feed pump pattern and core box. http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad134/Johnlanark/Herreshoff%20engine/Feedpumppatternandcor...

From memory, that design formed the basis of the Rose class hull, still sold by Beckman Boats.

Making a Bronze Tiller

I made a tiller based on the ones on some of the Frolics. It is for my old yacht so I posted it here

http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread. ... nze-Tiller

but then thought that it may be of interest to steamboaters too.

Re: Three Drum Boilers

Great progress and looking excellent Noel. One question - what tool did you use to expand the tubes into the small lower drums? Space is very tight in there. John

Riggs Patent Reversing Gear

I was browsing an old book "Drawing for Machinists and Engineers" and came across this idea which I have not seen before. If the crank of a single cylinder engine stops at dead centre, no motion can take place until it moves sideways a little. Cam F and roller G are carried on plunger H, which has s...

Re: First core bockes

This is wonderful Rainier, you are setting an amazing new standard. Looking back a page, are you saying that you have already built a Reprap machine? I assume that you could use it to make the patterns with core prints, and the core boxes. Or is this still a long way in the future as I think you may...

Re: Type of wood for stingers

Hi Bill - nice boat. Iroko would be a good durable and tough wood for your bearers. If you are in Scotland, you can buy it at Gilmour & Aitken in Alexandria. They sell long lengths but will cross cut it to fit your transport. John
