Re: Burning wood
I currently use a grate but I have only done two short trips with my boat and was wondering if no grate would be better. The point of dealing with a residual fire at the dock or when loading the boat on the trailer is a good one. Since it seems most people use a grate I will keep mine. Thanks for th...

Burning wood
A question for those that burn wood, Do you use a grate so the air goes under the fire, or burn it without a grate, A grate might allow a hotter fire but no grate would allow a nicer bed of coals to build up ?

Cylinder packing question
After my engine runs for awhile I get some leakage from the packing. Not allot , but I wonder if this is normal with steam engines. The engine is a Hasbrouck#1 and I am using tefpack shaft packing with PTFE. Can anyone recommend a packing that they like?

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
These discussions have been very helpful. Today I bought a prop on E-bay, 12rh15 pitch. Although the rule of thumb would be that a 18 pitch would be best I was concerned about overloading my boiler, which is on the small size. It was only $140 with shipping so not a big investment to try out. Thanks...

No room for a larger prop. Would a 2 blade prop be a better choice than a 3 blade?- Mon Jun 19, 2023 5:14 pm

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
A two blade prop would be alot easier to make than a 3 blade but I do not know if that would work for my boat. I would think I would need a larger diameter than 12".

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
There is a 14 week wait to have a new prop made so I will search e-bay for one. I the meantime I will explore the possibility of making one . In the 1961Nov-Dec issue of Steamboats and Modern Steam launches there is an article where he mentions about the possibility of making one out of fiberglass. ...

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
Is there any problem with using a left hand prop? They seem to be more available on E-bay

new boat launch-propeller question
PXL_20230613_181245013.MP.jpg Launched my boat yesterday. It is assassin by Wes Farmer with a Hasbrouck #1 engine. My prop is a 12 x 12. 300rpm gives me 3 mph at 60-100 psi. 400 rpm gives me 4mph at 60-100 psi. 500rpm gives me no increase in speed. At 400 rpm I have to keep turning my steam nozzle ...
