Re: digital steam engine indicator

Mike, please give a brief explanation of a magnetic reluctor. I don'know that term. My thinking was to apply something that would not require access or contact to the crank shaft. (remote sensing)

Re: digital steam engine indicator

I see there has been much interesting discussion of the indicator proposal. I did not think of the difficulty of establishing the piston position and therefore the volume. I thought a rotary encoder would be fine. Even though the math would be rather simple to execute, it would have to happen fast. ...

Re: Unusual Valve Timing?

it is quite difficult to tell whether you are looking at leading or lagging. i have a 6a also and queried which direction was forward until i was schooled here that it was intended to rotate in the direction of compressing the stanchions.

Re: Hot well size

Floating plastic balls would insulate the water. BUT, if the surface of the balls is wet because of sloshing around, you have multiplied greatly the surface area of the fluid and thus the oxygenation rate of the water.

Re: crosshead feed pump not working

if you can see the piston moving, it's probably just sloshing water back and forth because the check valve is stuck. You might be able to peck on the valve and loosen it. We would love to see some pictures of your tug.

Re: the miracle of engine starting?

it was in reverse true; I was rocking between forward and reverse trying to find a start spot. When it started in reverse, the engine was in reverse. because aft was the direction of dock trouble, I moved the lever through neutral to forward but it would not start in forward. I'm going to try turnin...
