Re: Hex Hank Rivet Bushes

Rivnuts are good but have a high profile (they stick out the back of the sheet pretty far). They are also easy to install using the setting tool. Our goto for low profile installations are Pem nuts https://www.pemnet.com/products/product-finder/cls-m4-2/ . I haven't installed any myself as we always...

Re: Been a bit quiet lately, this should liven it up.

Maybe people out steaming? That's my excuse! I've been at the meet in Eagle River, WI. I can highly recommend it. Next year it is scheduled to run September 9-14. 20230914_094504 small.jpg My grandparents had a place in Rheinlander when I was a kid. It's lovely country, especially in the fall. It's...

Re: Been a bit quiet lately, this should liven it up.

She's a beautiful launch. I can't wait to see more photos of her! We've all been busy me thinks. South of the northwestern border there have been a few boat meets like the California Delta Meet, and others. I've been on a three+ week stint of all steam from working on a Liberty Ship, to the delta b...

Been a bit quiet lately, this should liven it up.

It's been a bit quiet around here lately. I know I have been lurking for a while as I have been working on an acquisition which is now completed. Spent the last week making a round trip from Colorado to Vancouver Island to pick this beauty up. I'm very excited to finally have my own steamboat. More ...

Ken,

Is this one of John King's designs? They are quite elegant.
It's derivative of John King's designs, built to ASME code as far as practical (but not a code boiler due to the aforementioned tube issue)

Hi Ken. Any progress to report? Living vicariously through your build :)
Sadly, no progress to report. Have had a few irons in the fire that had an impact on the boiler design but fell through, so hopefully back to the build once the bathroom remodel is completed.

Re: Steam drum

Roller is an E1 from Wicksteed in the UK https://wicksteed.com/wicksteed-product ... expanders/. Purchased extra mandrels as I expect I'll need to trim one to get it to fit into the mud drum.

Thinking of using an extended 1/4" drive, pneumatic ratchet. But that's TBD

Re: Steam drum

Added a bunch of air to two 4" tubes to make a pair of mud drums. Next comes comes some tube bending.

Cheers

Used every bit of the vertical, even with the 4" riser" for the reamer to clear the tube.
So nice to have access to the machine tools at work...
Yes, it is.

Nice setup. Looks like all of the rods were used from step block set and a bit or organic material thrown in for good measure!!!!

Re: Steam drum

To be a Code Boiler, welded or not, requires material certifications, and if the boiler drums are not seamless tubes/pipe, then radiography is required. That is plenty expensive by itself. Steam & mud drums are SA-106 gr B seamless carbon tube, End caps are SA-516 grade 70, all definitely code mate...
