Re: TWIN 32 x 38 mm - steam engine for small boats or canoes

(quote) "For a typical launch engine, 150 psig saturated steam 365F inlet ( 10 Barg, 185C) and atmospheric exhaust, 0 psig 212F ( 0 Barg/100C), the cylinder metal will run close to 300F, (149C), which is considerably hotter than typical ICE practice." I think the difference here is theoretical as op...

Re: TWIN 32 x 38 mm - steam engine for small boats or canoes

From my automotive stand point an Ali block with liner should prove no problem. The fit is usually extra secured by the cylinder head (and we have one both ends). It works with I.C. temps which are far higher than steam, so forget that worry. The liner could also be heat shrunk in. My twin, although...

Re: River Song Videos

Mostly the weather that weekend was absolutely foul, but the sight of 30+ steam boats leaving the Jetty at Bowness for a tour round the islands was something to behold.

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

If the slot is wider than the pin, even by a small amount, then shape a piece of brass/bronze to fit as best you can and soft solder it in. Then work out the position of the bearing and drill and ream it back in. Not a full blown 'engineering' type repair but more than adequate for that use.

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

Kelly beat me to it with his drawing. I have a small stationary twin that has adjustable bearings. Someone at some stage had soldered the two halves of the small ends together, out of round (???). Folks do odd things sometimes. Granted it was fiddly to get together but a bit of patience did it. It i...

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

Are you sure it is Babbit? It could just be someone's bodge with soft solder by the looks. I'm rather with Bart in this one, convert it to what works for you, plastic? P/B? Oilite?

Re: Green Twin Complete

That's quite a useful size, somewhere in the 0.75HP range at 100psi.

Re: Wooden bearings

I volunteered for a time working on restoring a flint and bone mill, and the line shafts (10" dia) were set in Lignum bearings. It was said as long as the speeds were slow it was ideal. They had possibly been there since the place was built 150 years before.
