engine alignment
I am trying to put together a process to align my engine to the propeller shaft. Considering a 3" x 5" x 4" compound engine is in the 400 pound range, and the work has to be done in the bilge, I am a bit overwhelmed. Any thoughts on how to make sure that nothing bad happens to either the crank shaft...

Another boiler for sale. It is not mine.
While looking for steam stuff, I found this. It is not mine and is not big enough for my needs.

steam atomizing oil burner
I am working on putting the pieces together on paper to help me construct a complete boiler / engine system. My original thought was to have the boiler oil fired. I am trying to avoid having to depend on electricity as much as possible. I would like to have the oil burner atomized by steam or compre...

Re: how to keep the batteries charged
Very Nice! That is the kind of answer I was looking for. The Sirius engine may be a bit difficult to find, are there other options that come to mind?

Re: Here is Steamy
Steamy has a fiberglass hull. Yes, weight is an issue and I will do all I can to keep the weight and center of gravity as low as possible. I do have plans of getting a F250, SuperDuty, PowerStroke to pull her with. The current trailer is a home built and I have plans to get a better one when the tim...

Re: Here is Steamy
all these boats really are to heavy to be frequently trailed and should be kept in the water. How upsetting to hear that. I live about 70 miles from any navigable body of water. I had hoped to use the boat to explore the many beautiful lakes, reservoirs and the Colombia River here in the state of W...

how to keep the batteries charged
What is the common electrical configuration for a steamboat? 12VDC, 24VDC?
What is used to charge the batteries? Do you hang an automotive alternator of the drive shaft? Do you install a small aux steam engine? How do you charge the batteries if you are at anchor over night?

Here is Steamy
This is my new 3 year project. Steamy is a former 26' US Navy whaleboat. The plan is to remove the rear cabin and restore the back half to an open deck, the main cabin needs to be raised by about 4" for more head room, the diesel engine will be removed and a boiler and steam engine will be installed...

Re: Greetings from Yakima, Wa
@FredRosse: Boy did I miss the boat on that one. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I plan steam in the resivors of the Colombia River, inland lakes of Washington and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho so I should be able to avoid the vacuum pump / condenser configuration for now. Maybe some day we will make it ...

Re: Greetings from Yakima, Wa
Thank you all for your excellent answers. I think I have the idea now: The vacuum in the line between the engine and the condensor reduces the amount of free oxygen in the water. This reduces rust in the boiler. The vacuum also reduces the backpressure between the engine and condensor. This results ...
