Oil burner consumption

I am considering buying one of the Beckman Boatworks forced draft oil burners for future longer distance travels. I'm quite happy with wood for most of my steaming but there are times when I just can't cram enough wood in the boat. I'm looking for user experiences. I gather that the electrical draw ...

Re: Propellor tip clearance

The engine is governed at 3200 r.p.m. (Yanmar 3HM35 rated at 30 h.p continuous) and the reduction is around 1.8-1. So yeah, the shaft r.p.m is probably more like 1400 at 2500 cruise. This on a 7.5 ton 36' sloop. The days of the little one lunger auxiliary that would barely push the boat to hull spee...

Re: Propellor tip clearance

Lots of thought and good information from the troops. A big reason why I stay on here! The power loading is around ten times as much on my sailboat as on my launch. 18" launch prop v.s 15" sailboat prop. 20 shaft h.p. v.s. 3-4 on the launch. 400 r.p.m. on the launch v.s. 2000 on the sailboat. The sa...

Be sure and store the boat you were working on in a safe way so that it doesn't suffer rot and damage. Someone else may well want to go on from where you left off.

Re: Steamboating Magazine

The word is that he is alive and living in Portland but not involved with steaming at present. No details on anything else so I'm going to drop the subject.

Thanks to all who were concerned. Apparently not needed.

Re: Steamboating Magazine

That's encouraging but kinda weird. Wish we knew more. Was this a steamer who had the information?

I hope he's right.

Re: Steamboating Magazine

Three days ago I dropped by Ron's old address on Hoyt St. in East Portland. It is a rather run down duplex in a rather run down neighborhood. The middle aged couple who answered the door said that they had just moved in the day before and knew nothing of Ron. I knocked on the door of the other half ...

Re: Steamboating Magazine

I tried his phone just now and got a voice mail with another person's voice and name. I'm going to be traveling past his home on Thursday morning and will drop by and inquire.

I have no credentials as either an engineer or a wordsmith but, to quote some British song writers, "I get by with a little help from my friends."
