1929 film
This is a film done in 1929 recording the opening of the lock system on the Ohio River. There are numerous stern wheelers & many smaller craft in the background. It is interesting that among all of the river boats there is not one with the crown top on the stacks. Was that a Mississippi thing or a c...

Re: Operating pressure
Could the space causing the trouble be once taken up by firebrick or some type of liner?

Re: A Salute to the Deck ...
Ron, Be careful, here in Canada people were justifiably complaining about the idiot factor with their jet-ski watercraft. The end result is that everyone has to have a "boater's card" to operate any powered boat. The course is well designed & covers, navigation, safety, common sense rules & even a b...

Re: Burning Liquid Fuels
My little boat has a vaporising burner setup that is fed by air regulated to 8 psi over the fuel. It has 2 tanks, one with kerosene for normal running & a second for varsol (paint thinner) for starting. A simple 3 way fuel valve from an army truck selects the supply tank. The varsol burns much clean...

Re: Water Treatment
Mike, I would be cautious with acetylene, it is very explosive & easily lit. I have removed truck tires from impossible split rims by introducing acetylene through the valve stem, put chains around the tire & rim in several places then with a lit rag on a long stick you just need to get near the ste...

Re: Water Treatment
Thank you Fred & Mike. I think the advantage of the RV antifreeze is in that it is unlikely to leave any deposits inside the system. I have done as you described to fill all of the lines & valves plus I have filled the boiler as well. Is there any reason to not fill the boiler? Remember my boiler ho...

Re: Water Treatment
An interesting aside regarding the nitrogen idea is that the Cloud series Rolls Royce cars have a sealed box section frame that is filled with nitrogen under a slight positive pressure to prevent rust from attacking the steel from within. This works well until someone leaves a bolt out somewhere thu...

Oiler pistons
I am about to rebuild a mechanical oiler that has pitted pistons. The device has six pumps, each with a 5/16 diameter piston that passes through a fine cup packing arrangement & pumps oil by simple displacement. The pumps are submerged in the oil while working. The pistons look to be mild steel tha...

Re: Heat Shield
Not that it would have an application in our type of steamboats but many years ago I discovered the remains of about a 90' steamboat that spent its working life on Ahmic Lake in Northern Ontario. It had been stripped of its machinery & run aground in a bay & left to rot. By the time I found it the e...
