I have put mechanical packings in several engines with very good results. I used a bronze filled teflon product. It is spendy but works well. Barn find
A nice little barn find. 3" bore X 4" stroke, Stephenson valve. The fly ball governor is a little out of place but cute. A belt to the governor would make it difficult to operate the reversing lever. Turns on air, needs a good cleaning, the piping is a little funky too. The lubricator is patent date...

It is important to distinguish between “ligaments” and “tube sheets”. In the code (ASME) ligaments are the material between tubes through the shell as in a water tube boiler. I am a little confused. In the boiler business the insulation is the “lagging” and the sheet metal covering is the “jacket”. Did the first message suggest that the lagging was the finished surface as with wood lagging bound with brass bands?
