Re: Metal packing vs. stuffing box

I have put mechanical packings in several engines with very good results. I used a bronze filled teflon product. It is spendy but works well. Re: Barn find

Barn find

A nice little barn find. 3" bore X 4" stroke, Stephenson valve. The fly ball governor is a little out of place but cute. A belt to the governor would make it difficult to operate the reversing lever. Turns on air, needs a good cleaning, the piping is a little funky too. The lubricator is patent date...

Re: Stress in a Boiler Shell

Tube sheets are typically flat, applied inside a shell as in a firetube boiler. In so far as the shell is typically self-supp...

Re: Boiler Lagging

I am a little confused. In the boiler business the insulation is the “lagging” and the sheet metal covering is the “jacket”. Did the first message suggest that the lagging was the finished surface as with wood lagging bound with brass bands?

Ancillary vacuum appurtenances

One last question for the evening: Does anyone have an opinion on the application of a steam ejector to the keel condenser for the purpose of drawing down a flooded condenser or to facilitate the starting of the engine?
