Re: Increasing a VFT boilers output by increasing the firebox size

This is a rather long and boring presentation, so most steamboaters should skip to the next entry on this thread. I read all of it and I appreciate you talking your time. Nyitra is a puffer, and her firebox of exactly 16" ID, so I'm watching this thread with interest. I have been considering puttin...

Re: How to Install Brass Trim Between Hull and Deck??

Mike, The addition of tin also gives the alloy an inherent resistance to dezincification, thereby further inhibiting the impingement by seawater at higher than normal temperatures. Copper Alloy 464 has uses for decorative fittings, turnbuckles, shafting, and as a universal non-corrosive marine alloy...

Steamboats in The 1898 Battle of Cárdenas Bay

This is a youtuber I watch called "The History Guy".

This whole video is about torpedo boats, and the different steam vessels in the 1890's.

I can't seem to get the embedded video to work, but here is the link:

Re: Favourite cylinder lubrication

Mobile 600w super cylinder oil is what I've used. I run up to 200psi. https://www.amazon.com/MOBIL-600W-SUPER-CYLINDER-OIL/dp/B00G97EIJ2 Every major petroleum company sells a very similar product, it is being used for gear motors used in fracking nowdays. Still has tallow in it, the lake flies in ch...

Union Pacific 4014 Steam Update

This is one of the largest locomotives in the world that is being restored to operational service.

It is so large and long that the boiler is articulated.

Re: Benson type boiler project

I would suggest thinking about how you plan to remove soot. Make sure to think about what brushes/scrapers you are going to use and that you can feasibly get into all the areas for a good cleaning when the boiler is not fired. When the boiler is being fired, some folks employ a steam lance. Steam la...

Re: Benson type boiler project

What fuel are you considering using with your design? With what I see in the picture I think you will have an issue with soot unless you use some really clean burning fuel. Soot is a common battle with solid fueled steamboats. It's horrible stuff, it accumulates and it can really hamper heat transfe...

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

And given the poor flexibility of uniflow engines I'm not a big fan. Our power plants do not run at a constant speed and load. I was crew on a boat with a state of the art three cylinder inflow and we nearly took out a few docks by not being able to reverse direction predictably. I respectfully dis...
