Paddle Steamer Alexander Arbuthnot - 10HP

I had thought before, why not take a steam traction engine, and throw it on a boat? I just found an example of exactly this! A "Portable" steam engine is a precursor to the Steam Traction engine. Because they weren't self propelled, horses usually towed them to work locations. They took a 10 hp Rust...

Re: Valve Gear Simulation

For many years I have evaluated steam engine valve gears, and have often wondered why the Stephenson Valve Gear Mechanism is so prevalent. Does anyone know why? Abner Doble (of steam car fame) considered Stephenson valve gear: (...) the most universally suitable valve gear of all, for it can be wor...

Re: Upscaling a Hasbrouck engine

Olav, Here are calculations based on the B2 boiler you have. This is assuming the B2 boiler has the same MAWP as the B2 35KW, 9bar. B2 MAWP = 9bar = 130.5psi MEP = MAWP/2 MEP = 4.5bar or 65.25psi 15.7kg/hr steam = 1 horsepower B2 25KW horsepower = 2.0382 HP =~2HP Hasbrouck #10 2.25" bore x 3" stroke...

Re: Upscaling a Hasbrouck engine

Cyberbadger, have you ever steamed a single cylinder boat w/ a slip eccentric? - Bart I have not. I have jammed my hand enough to draw blood testing a 3HP single cylinder slip eccentric engine. That was enough for my testing that that engine wasn't suitable for my purposes. (It's a great litt...

Re: Upscaling a Hasbrouck engine

a simple engine of 3" bore and 4" stroke would produce 5 hp. This is exactly the dimensions of the 5 hp Semple engine, built many years ago. Somehow I don't know how that calculation can come out to 5. I have an engine of exactly 3" bore x 4" stroke, two identical cylinders and that is 6HP. (Both s...

Antonia Engine - Marshall valve gear

I found a steamboater in Germany who has posted a few videos of his Steam Launch Antonia. The engine looks like it was machined and fabricated custom for this launch. :?: I was wondering if anyone can identify the valve gear, or perhaps describe the operation of this engine. Engine under steam: http...

Re: New to Forum

I thought they were PRESERVING history, not converting? Muskoka Power Squadron donated $5000 for the "upgrade" of steam to electric. Sea trials of the new system are expected late 2022 summer.
