Re: Blackstaffe Woes

One further bit of info that I have just found is from the Volcania's owner who backs up Woodbine's owners advice. "Most of the heating surface area is in the coils so you need to get heat directly onto the coils - heating the bottom of the steam drum, as you rightly imply, isn’t going to work. I or...

Re: Blackstaffe Woes

Gentlemen, Don't read too much into my sketch which is not to scale; the scope for moving the burners further inboard is quite limited. The advice I had from the owner of Woodbine was to rotate the bar burners such that they were directed at the coils without flame impingement. I followed his advice...

Ignore the last line of that posting. I'm still struggling to post photos.
This is Woodbine's boiler.

Re: Blackstaffe Woes

OK Gents, I am with you in respect of the baffles although I'm not sure how Kelly's perpendiculars function but then maybe I am just being dim. If I replace the missing baffles over the tubes exits to increase the flue gas dwell time in the casing and consider if I can fit some other form of bafflin...

Re: Blackstaffe Woes

Hello Kelly, The old casing had a bad case of tin worm and needed complete replacement. When I disassembled it I took my usual precaution of photographing each stage and your post sent me back to that record. I checked and there was no sign of a baffle across the top of the coils BUT then I saw a si...

Re: Blackstaffe Woes

Hello Dietrich, At first, I tried a single gas bar-burner intended to emulate the original single kerosene bar-burner. This proved to be a dead loss. I was lucky in that I had the attention of the Sales Manager at Stedmark Burners who was interested in the project and promised to provide a couple of...

Has anybody anything to add to the above. I'm open to all (technical) suggestions.

Re: Blackstaffe Woes

Hello Dietrich, The soot you are seeing in the photo is that deposited on the coils when the boiler was oil-fired and is seen in the old casing. That casing is now scrap and the coils have remained clean under gas-firing. I take your point about internal scaling but the boiler has been operated in s...

Re: Blackstaffe Woes

Bart, Thanks for your quick reply and I will see what I can do with respect to uptake temperature. The gas pressure holds steady at whatever the regulator is set at. I take your point about using the heating coils sparingly. In fact I have yet to use them (so far) as the water temperature has been s...

<t>For some reason my first post will not load all the photos as intended. This shows bar burners prior to being turned outboard by about 15 degrees.</t>
