Re: Hello from Montreal

Welcome to the forum! I love Montreal, all the beautiful buildings, and history. My mother grew up in St-Bruno-De-Montaville. I spent every summer out there visiting my Grandma and Granddad. Has the old canal that goes to the waterfront been restored to operation now? Those are some wonderful photos...

Re: Oil burner consumption

Mike, on my 2200lb 22' launch I get about 8mpg or 1gal/hr of kerosene with 4 adults onboard, a 7hp compound, and a highly efficient monotube boiler. On the 16ton 40ft big boat we get about 5-7gal/hr of #4 fuel oil (or vegetable equivalent), a 30-40hp compound, and 100sqft/hs Worthington watertube bo...

Re: 1890-1910 50' Sidewheeler

Hi Carl, I wasn't able to easily navigate the historical society website on my phone, but a quick online image search revealed some grainy photos of her. I think there was a step over the shaft. Though, in those days maybe nothing. Back then they tended to rely solely on a person's common sense and ...

Re: New Stainless Economizer

Something to keep in mind that we have encountered is overheating the economizer when not pumping water. We've mainly encountered it when we've had a hot fire going while waiting to leave and the engine isn't running. The economizer gets so hot that when we did start running the engine and pumping w...

Re: steamboat Emerald

I know I’m digging up an old post here, but I’m trying to track down where this boat may have ended up, as it was my dads once, as he built the engine, and assembled it. Here’s an old video from when it was on the delta. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2IVVeW7XY0Q Welcome to the forum Cooper. Hope yo...

Re: A lovely engine with an interesting bit of history.

Clear anodizing should be relatively close, especially after some oil film... I made a hollow two-piece aluminium piston for the 10" LP on the big boat... The original was 3" thick cast iron, and weighed 30+lbs more than the new aluminium one. Sooooooooooooooooooo much closer to an actual "balance" ...

Re: British Rivet Manufacturers?

I think Kelly would be the one to know about rivets being inferior in the USA, He is the VP of motive power at Strasburg Railroad, one of the leading tourist steam operations in America. I would wonder if Strasburg makes their own at all ? I know they manufacture injectors, safety valves and staybo...

Re: small steam engine?

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with Mike, 5hp is probably overkill for a 14' launch. A boiler required to feed that hungry Lil guy would be rather large for a boat that size.

Suitable complete running engines should be relatively easy to find amongst the model engineering crowd.
