Re: British Rivet Manufacturers?

I think Kelly would be the one to know about rivets being inferior in the USA, He is the VP of motive power at Strasburg Railroad, one of the leading tourist steam operations in America. I would wonder if Strasburg makes their own at all ? I know they manufacture injectors, safety valves and staybo...

Re: small steam engine?

Welcome to the forum.

I agree with Mike, 5hp is probably overkill for a 14' launch. A boiler required to feed that hungry Lil guy would be rather large for a boat that size.

Suitable complete running engines should be relatively easy to find amongst the model engineering crowd.

Re: Favourite cylinder lubrication

Yes, a mechanical lubricator would work I think. Our lubricator was a large glass lunkenheimer with a hand-operated lever affixed directly to the main steam line just after the throttle (not a hydrostatic lubricator). Too close and too hot.

Re: Wheel sizes ?

I would think the spring would help dampen the "beat" of the propeller wash also.

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

I'm really interested in how this will work. I would love to see some more pictures. Are you going to pressure lubricate, and of so, are you going to use a scavenger pump to clear the crankcase?

Re: digital steam engine indicator

I know I would love to have one. Especially something mated with a user-friendly (read near-luddite) graphing software.

Re: Favourite cylinder lubrication

We used colloidal graphite in a displacement lubircator on the big boat... problem was we kept it suspended in water and the water had this nasty habit of evaporating out of the lubircator as it got hot. It did a great job of lubricating inside the engine, but we kept having the evaporation problem ...

Re: Hello from Massachusetts!

Reflex glasses are more robust and give a more positive water level appearance (usually shows up much darker where the water is in the glass). They're much less prone to shattering and one would really have to try to break one. The downside is they're bulky, and should be blown down more frequently ...

Re: Union Pacific 4014 Steam Update

I think is the just the running gear that is articulated. It's amazing they're restoring one! Hoping to make it to the sesquicentennial of the transcontinental railroad this May and see her in action! Now they need to take on the restoration of the only remaining cab-forward that is in the Sacrament...
