That diagram is about right. In large plant practice as shown, engineers would adjust the pump speed as necessary. That would negate the need for a feed water bypass/return as seen on plumbing of smaller vessels with pumps driven directly by the main engine.

If I'm not mistaken, the '102' indicates the square feet of heating surface. If that is the case, then the weight figure is realistic, and it would be heaps larger than is needed for either of your examples.
That little engine would get away with a boiler of a modest 20-30sqft of heating surface ...

Several ways to skin that cat.
One is centrally located, or slightly forward machinery, helm on the operator's side of hull. Additional hull at forward end of cockpit, or opposite side (or both!) to allow for pressing the passengers into service when you've got your head in the bilge.
