Re: The 'perfect' Stuart Turner...

Hallo Greg,
please send me a PN with your postal adress then you will get the piston valve drawings within two weeks.
I have to copy first, these were the last drawings I did by hand. ;)
But be prepared, it is not a simple operation.

Re: The 'perfect' Stuart Turner...

Hallo Greg,
do you want drawings of the modified/enlarged 5A ?
You could scale them back to original size.

Scotty

edit: we had run this engine with > 800 rpm (no load). :D
Service speed is 350 rpm.

Re: The 'perfect' Stuart Turner...

http://s7.directupload.net/images/user/140824/temp/85w7mrsu.jpg This is a 5A - double size, 12.5 HP effective. It drives a 5 ton boat. It runs now for 25 years, 19 years ago we converted it to piston valve gear. Starting and reversing is absolutely no problem. But it has been fabricated to a very h...

Re: Burst Disc/Burst diaphragm/Rupture Disc Pressure Safety

There are other codes beside ASME. :D
TRD (Technische Regeln Dampf) and GL (Germanischer Lloyd) demands two safeties, same as two water level indicators, regardless of boiler size.

Re: Burst Disc/Burst diaphragm/Rupture Disc Pressure Safety

Question to CB: How will you know that your rupture disc will open at the specified pressure? Testing might be a bit difficult .... :D Anyway the standard for a steam boiler is two type approved safety valves, same like waterlevel gauge glass, feedwater supplyand main steam shut off. Some codes forb...

Re: Boiler advice

Hallo Wes, most locomotive boilers will deliver their power only with enough draft, that means non condensing. Don't know if this will be right for you. A locomotive boiler could be lengthened in the tube section, 2 ft 2 in seems anyway very short. If you have a little bit of patience, I will write ...

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

Easier to build ... I wold not say so. You have to take into account all the various parts of the system called boiler (pressure part, furnace insulation, lagging, accessability and so on). Both types are complicated to build if you want performance with reasonable weight and good efficiency. Safer ...

Re: Legal Requirements for Steam Boat Operation

Hallo Achim, for privately owned and operated boilers in Germany I know of no case where a boiler operator's licence was required (I could be wrong). All the relevant laws are only applicable for commercially employed persons. As it is different from state to state you could try this website and ask...

Re: What is a "steam dryer"?

In large watertube boilers it is an apparatus in the steam drum to remove the water from the saturated steam before it goes to the superheater. Also called a demister. On a high pressure boiler you really don't want any water (and if only drops) in the superheater. Mostly a large packing of stainles...
