Re: Relaxing Rings

I did what Fred says to rings for a duplex pump only heated with a torch. Worked good.

Re: Fabric Canopy Fringe - Where to Get It??

Buy some sunbrella from a sailmaker or order it online. Cut it to shape and sew on a reinforcing strip, a soft binding, on the scalloped edge. A sailmaker may be able to do it for you too. Sunbrella resists the sun and has minimal fading, mine has held up well. Sunbrella is the colored edge of a a s...

Re: Paint

True oil based topside paint is a thing of the past, I think only one company in the NE anyway still makes it, Kirby. Like I said, can't go wrong with brightside polyurthane. It holds up well. I find myself repainting the boats every other year, the ones that live in the water anyway. My trailered b...

Re: Paint

All of my wooden boats are painted with brightsides (interlux). It goes on easy, looks great and is easy to repair. Unfortunately, no custom colors. Around here anyway, most every color they make is in stock.

Re: What steamboating looks like to the average Joe

My favorite question: " is that a real steamboat"?

My answer " no, the fire and whistle are fake".

Trips people up pretty good.

Re: the miracle of engine starting?

Still condensation in the cylinders? I have a compound, it takes forever for the LP to warm up when cold. At least fifteen minutes warming with the cocks open, but this usually only warms one side of the HP piston. Rock the engine until it makes a full revolution on its own. Then I let it idle at th...

Re: S.L. Hope

The main cause of the bearing failure was due to thrust problems. I purchased the boat second hand and the engine was installed on stringers that moved and floated with respect to the hull, this coupled with an inadequate thrust bearing caused major problems with the valve gear, piston valves and ec...
