Re: Steam-powered Canoes

15 FT Coleman Square Stern Canoe (Scanoe) with Flash Boiler and 4.7 cubic inch chain saw engine converted to steam. I/O drive, made from a 2.5 HP outboard lower unit, turns a 7" x 7" propeller at 700 RPM, 4 MPH. One of the very few "Car Top Carry" Steamboats. That last picture h...

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

Whilst on this topic, I used to amaze many people by boiling water in a paper bowl or cup in the campfire.

Steam-powered Canoes

That's the sort of creature I'm talking about. I would like to know what is the deal with a propellor and shaft for such a wee beastie.

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

I have some previous experience with methylated spirit and kerosene burners. I do understand that the truth of the matter is that fire-tube boilers are easier to fire than water-tube boilers, in particular when burning coal or wood because you have a large steam-reserve which allows you to build up ...

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

I should explain that I am an INTJ personality type. I love to theorise about it. I'd get a proven design built, or at least get a proper engineer to ok any ideas that I have before actually trying this sort of thing.

I AM NOT HACKING MY OWN STEAM BOILER!

I might be crazy, but I'm not stupid.

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

Copper end caps rated to 3,500psi are available in Australia only up to 5" diameter... drat. I rather wanted a fairly large steam-drum which would act as a steam reserve. Theoretically, this means that the boiler would be able to withstand up to 35 times working pressure. At the moment I'm look...

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

Indulge my love for theorising for a few moments. Let's say that I attempt to build a simple water-tube boiler. The steam drum is a 6" or 8" diameter copper pipe which has had the ends capped in some way which makes it a suitable pressure vessel. This would be connected to two "mud dr...

Re: Are water-tube boilers actually easier to build?

Of course, my other problem is that I don't know any dimensions for building such a beast. As far as I can find, you can only obtain suitable copper pipe/tube for pressure vessels in up to 8" outside diameter with a 2.8mm wall thickness. It seems that even if I built a simple water-tube boiler ...

Re: Something to make a steamboater cringe

Pointless destruction - that's what it is. The purpose of art is to expound the transcendentals of goodness, truth and beauty. This is yet another example of "art" which is designed to draw attention to itself by means of shock. This isn't real art. It's a form of exploitation by means of ...
