Hi Dietrich,
Nice work. Here is an idea to secure your packing glands. I made these leaf springs from 1095 steel, then tempered them. Very easy to make.

Re: Wooden bearings
Hi Folks What I was wondering is whether one could get sealed for life bearing small enough to use on such a model engine. I am still toying with the steam canoe idea when eventually I get some free time in the workshop. Enjoy the beers! Best wishes Pete Ball bearings are available in very small si...

Re: Wooden bearings
"'Over-tightening belts or overloading the screws will quickly kill motor bearings.'' The belt wasn't over tensioned. I've installed thousands of steppers and servos over the last 25 years, loss of case bearings has never been an issue, only a consideration when tensioning a belt. As I wrote above, ...

Re: Wooden bearings
Servos and Steppers aren't designed for side (overhung) load. Most general duty motors have surprisingly small overhung load capability. Ken There are literally millions of CNC machines that run steppers and servos with timing pulleys and belts. It has to do with available, pitchleads of ballscrews...

Re: Wooden bearings
Adding to what I wrote above regarding ball bearing service. On the tug I use a DC brushed servo as a generator belted to the engine. After many hours of service, the bronze sleeve bearing in the case wore out. Opting to fix instead of replace, I machined a pocket and installed a ball bearing, never...

Re: Wooden bearings
For clean, quiet trouble free operation, it's the only way. On the tug and the car, which both have ball bearing lower ends, I never even think about them. One less thing to deal with.Lopez Mike wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 2:42 pmI feel like such a radical using sealed ball bearings on my main bearings and eccentrics!

Dietrich,
Very nice work and clever use of a solid piece of cast iron to make a twin cylinder.
