Re: Steam powered outboard?

There's not much left online about Terry Williams steam outboard, but I did find a reference to some coverage in Steamboating bulletin #43. I can't find an issue of that anywhere. Does anyone here have a copy? Any help would be greatly appreciated.... I've located my copy; I'll scan it in when I ha...

Re: How to Prepare Steamboat for Heated Winter Storage

Consider the risk of power failure in deciding what preparations seem warranted. For our Airstream I connect 20 psi compressed air to the water inlet and flush all the lines, drain the fresh water tank and put RV antifreeze in the traps. For our 26' Rainbow we drained everything. I'm replumbing Rai...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website

On my list of "things to try" is a hot pressure washer coil, fed by a variable speed 12V DC hypro pump, and controlled like the Herreshoff coil boilers in terms of a maintaining the water level in a well insulated steam separator drum. If the steam got too dry/hot, the water level drops as it evapor...

Re: Mono-tube steam generators - special adaptations

The Herreshoff system was used on fairly good size power plants; this meant that condensation losses were significantly less. Example 6x10.5x10, with boiler tubing at 2" diameter.

Re: Mono-tube steam generators - special adaptations

Since our small steam plants suffer from considerable condensation due to volume/surface ratios, keeping the steamfeed just slightly superheated might suffice - and be easier - than sensing dryness. This could be done of course by measuring both temperature and pressure and using a saturation temp/p...

Re: Mono-tube steam generators - special adaptations

Perhaps this is obvious to everyone, this valve isn't designed to balance the pressure, it's designed to ensure that the flow in both coils is the same - a classic flow divider valve. Note that that if coil 1 has more back pressure and thus receives less flow, the shuttle will be forced to the right...

Re: Steam drum

Caution: Some opinions follow. This is of course US practice; other countries have their own regulations, which are often much stricter. Something is either a Code boiler, or not a Code boiler. Code boilers are required in some areas/services, and not in others. If you want to put a boiler in a plac...
