Re: It's Winter!

We had a check valve explode a few years ago due to ice. We figured the only way to get all the water out is to take the pipe off and pour it out.

Re: Newbie

Sail boats also tend to have a shallow draft, meaning a heavy boiler and engine may make the boat somewhat unstable.

Re: Floods in Cumbria, UK

At 1st glance there is no significant damage.

However things like boiler insulation won't like the water.

Re: Floods in Cumbria, UK

Our boat is now afloat again. The boat as we found it: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a228/Maltelec/Floods/November%202009/Picture038.jpg http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a228/Maltelec/Floods/November%202009/Picture039.jpg You can see the water line on the wall - if the ropes hadn't have pulled ...

Steaming down Ullswater

In a Land Rover... The water was 2 1/2 foot in the deepest part, though the waves were a foot high, making the peaks 3 foot. This was for at least 400 yards. Mr Plod powered though no problem though. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a228/Maltelec/Floods/November%202009/Picture001.jpg http://i12.pho...

Re: Newbie

The best description of cost I have heard about steam boats is that you make a hull shaped hole in the water and fill it with money. However, this doesn't mean that it will cost a lot. If you had a hull handy, and a house full of engines, with the odd boiler lying around in the garden, it doesn't ta...

Re: Floods in Cumbria, UK

Today I have spent some hours being very cold and wet in an attempt to assess the damage on the steamboats. 3 boats have sunk, 1 has a crushed cabin, 1 has a very dented funnel and the really large one in unknown. The one with the crushed cabin has probably feared the worst. The three which have sun...
