Re: Flotation

This flotation is required by the US Coast Guard in commercially produced boats. In general, traditional small craft with steam plants often don't have the interior volume to provide emergency flotation, which includes buoyancy for people, engines, etc. This is exacerbated if the boat burns firewood...

Re: Lagging....

Rub it in, Steve. Rub it in.
Of course... that's how that bronze stays so shiny.

winter musings - Otto the Pilot ?

Our double ender steamboat Rainbow really needs someone hanging onto the tiller... some of this may disappear when I build a new rudder someday, but in the mean time I keep thinking of an autopilot. I realize that automation of this sort is somewhat heretical to many steamboaters, but I find myself ...

Re: Lagging....

I have a foot or so of flexible steam pipe between my boiler and engine. Not that it needs to flex seriously but to fix a cracking issue I had with ordinary copper pipe. In spite of some seriously solid motor beds in my new hull, the engine does move a bit when working hard. The question being, are...

Re: Lagging....

There are also various products available made from fiberglass sold as exhaust wrap. Keep in mind that unless covered with a water proof coating, these wraps will soak up rain or spray making them less effective both as insulators and in preventing burns, and for those covering covering steel rather...

Re: Wanted - antidote for poor record keeping issue

Looks like an early photo of Detroit Tug's boat.

See viewtopic.php?f=4&t=295&start=40#p1704 from 2010.

Re: Lagging....

That's Tite Bond III ( http://www.titebond.com/product/glues/e8d40b45-0ab3-49f7-8a9c-b53970f736af ). It's nice to work with something that's water cleanup; I apply it (thinned perhaps 5-10% as I'm working in a cool basement) with a cheap brush. It dries overnight (or less in warmer conditions), form...

Re: New member

Peter H., welcome to the forum!

I think I saw that boat (or perhaps a twin) once while we lived in CA... was that originally an electric launch?

Re: boat trailer question

If your boat is coming in at anywhere near the designed displacement (~700 lbs) that trailer will work nicely. I'd definitely avoid wrapping the rear bunks up too far as it makes them difficult to launch w/o a steep ramp. I'd also put some guide bars that contact the boat amidships to help center th...
