Re: Machining a crankshaft

I had one in our old Jaguar.... sm block 412 FI engine. That way it could be easily INTERNALLY balanced, it's now in Finland, I wonder if it's still alive. But who here is old enough to remember Hirth crankshafts, WHAT just me!?, Dammit, they also did the cranks for MotoGuzzi V8 racing bikes, in fac...

Re: It's DONE!!

Silver soldering isn't hard; just a higher temp and CLEAN parts, I was using a rod made for copper and it worked fine, after all this is decorative. The four valves are for the aux stuff; a repeating pressure gauge in the cabin, tea kettle, bilge eductor, and cabin heat. I've always liked the look o...

Re: It's DONE!!

The brass is silver soldered together, no way could I bend it like that.... maybe I NEED an English wheel. The smoke hood is steel with an inch of insulation above that and the brass was formed over the steel. I cut a piece of cardboard to fit and cut the brass to copy that, the corners are soldered...

It's DONE!!

Since my epoxy in the bilge STILL isn't dry, I GUESS it's just getting too cold at night OR I mixed up 2 batches of resin and no hardener I got around to finishing the Boiler. Now there is a lamp and a strip of Flexwatt heating the resin so MAYBE tomorrow it'll be set up, 70 degrees during the day b...

Re: Olfelt

Yeah I'll do that as a last resort, I HATE to put more holes in the hull!! But my more immediate concern is the inside of the hull where it's delaminated,I cut back two layers of laminations and it's still oil soaked, I don't want to cut in any deeper, but I'm afraid the epoxy won't stick the the oi...

Re: Olfelt

OK, here's some pix of the bottom of the bilge where the block had come from and next to it upside down is the block, you can see the area on the block where the glue wasn't stuck to anything. To work we go. And if ANYONE knows how to resize pix on a Motorola Droid 2 turbo let me KNOW, a PAIN sendin...

Re: Olfelt

Well the block follows the shape of the hull so it's down at the bottom of the bilge at one end and up under the floor at the other, it's about 6in tall and tapers to 3/4in over a distance of 1.5 ft. The lower end supports the pads the boiler sits on, that area is oily, watery soaked delaminated hul...

Re: Olfelt

OK, boiler is done and am working on the wood lagging. I have been running it with an old engine and have gotten up to full running pressure slowly; no leaks or explosions! Took parts off the old boiler so now I've got the stack (and whistle!) attached which off course gave me the draft I needed to ...

Re: Insurance

We went with State Farm after being with Allstate for 40 years, they dropped us cuz NOW we are in a "fire zone", funny we weren't for the last 30 years we've lived here! State Farm didn't seem to care about the steam part of the boat just the hull material, they weren't happy about wood but got over...
