Re: Lagging....

One of the reasons I like the glue before the paint is that it forms a hard skin. Under the Stanley's hood you're unlikely to get much mechanical damage, but in Rainbow with the people sitting around the boiler and engine we're more likely to see the insulation disturbed. Also, we feed the boiler w/...

Lagging....

I've been spending some time working on Rainbow, and needed to cover the insulation on some the steam piping. I read about Arabol and other casein-derived goo that could be used to protect pipe insulation. It occurred to me that a more modern wood glue might work as well, so I tried Tite-bond III wi...

Re: Ofeldt water level?

I built an Ofeldt boiler in 1996 with a steel drum and silver soldered copper coils. Originally, the bottom of the gauge glass was at the bottom of the top coil, but the silver soldered coils proved sensitive to low water levels and I lost a coil when the water level dropped a bit. I reworked the gl...

Re: Towards Building a Steam Powered Outboard Motor

What kind of RPM are you considering? What sort of rod bearings?

Re: Towards Building a Steam Powered Outboard Motor

Some random comments and thoughts based on my experiences: Some 35 years ago I converted a small cast-iron industrial refrigeration compressor (twin cylinder 2" x 2" ) to steam by adding a new head and steam chest, plus a rocker arm and slip eccentric for reversing. This went into a 19' wooden boat,...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website

Bart, could you elaborate on what your meant in your earlier post? On my list of "things to try" is a hot pressure washer coil, fed by a variable speed 12V DC hypro pump, and controlled like the Herreshoff coil boilers in terms of a maintaining the water level in a well insulated steam separator dr...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website

Isn't the biggest draw of a monotube boiler the fact that conventionally it contains only a small amount of superheated water at any particular moment, and so the damage due to a rupture is less likely to be catastrophic? Would a water level/steam separator drum remove that advantage? For small wat...

Re: Steam powered outboard?

The engineering involved was quite tricky; when racing the steam conditions were sometimes 800F and 800 PSI iirc. The megaphone exhaust was quite loud; if you make a steam outboard perform like a two-stroke, it sounds like one too, I guess :) Note that this level of performance in the steam outboard...

Re: Steam powered outboard?

There's not much left online about Terry Williams steam outboard, but I did find a reference to some coverage in Steamboating bulletin #43. I can't find an issue of that anywhere. Does anyone here have a copy? Any help would be greatly appreciated.... I've located my copy; I'll scan it in when I ha...
