Re: digital steam engine indicator

There is no reason that a rotary encoder couldn't be used as the piston location measuring device. It could be done the same way as mechanical indicators with a string and spring return. with the dynamic issues attendant with this kind of mechanical linkage. Measuring the rotational location of the ...

Re: Greetings from Washington State

The EB triple is quite the undertaking. One of the members has built two of them and they are works of art. I'm sure he will chime in with suggestions on what can be improved and pitfalls in the prints.

Re: More progress

Set up for line boring the crankshaft journals. Had to remove the lathe cross slide in order to be able to get the bedplate on centerline. It was 3/8" too tall.

Re: hydroforming a boiler from sheet metal

Proper Hydroforming is done in a enclosed die, not just blown up like a balloon. The tool will cost a fortune not to mention the need for FEA FEM to simulate the forming to predict that it doen't thin out too much in areas. Take two sheets of paper, tape two opposite edges together and blow in-betwe...

Re: I need to put a ring on it.

As it turns out I decided to source rings instead of making them. It really came down to the cost of material and risk of the unknown. The chunk of cast iron would have cost more than I paid for the rings. Then I would have still needed to spend the time making them and probably would have scrapped ...

Re: Watertube boiler casing lining

I was more concerned with the solid fuel hitting the insulation during firing. Should I be?

Thanks
