Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing
What is the diameter of the pin vs. the width of the slot? 1/4"pin. The slot is slightly wider, maybe 0.010" wider. I think the slot shouldn't really be a slot, it should probably just be a 1/4" hole. On the otherside it is hole that should be around 0.320". Likely whoever made this past repair did...

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing
I heated the one link to get the solder/babbit to come out. It appears to be a milled slot that was filled with the soft metal. It is hard to see it in the first photo, but it looks like they may have tried to mar the inside of the slot to give the soft metal something to hang on to. https://i.posti...

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing
Are you sure it is Babbit? It could just be someone's bodge with soft solder by the looks. It may be filled with solder, whatever it is it feels soft when you file it. At first glance It looks like a slot was machined and then filled. But when you look closer, It looks like the geometry has feature...

Renewing Babbit Bearing
I have two of these links in the stephenson style valve gear on my 1902 Toledo that appear to have been babbitted at some point. One of these links has a little more play then I like and I was considering repouring the babbit. I see that a copper shim was babbitted in one of these two links. The oth...

Re: TWIN 32 x 38 mm - steam engine for small boats or canoes
A better picture Looks like a robust solution for self disassembling engines! 8-) I had a valve packing nut unscrew it self completely this summer. Luckily it didn't really interfere with anything - it just dropped down to the top of the valve slide. I stopped for a few seconds and spun it back on ...

Great video Wes!
Some nice piloting and commanding on Persistance!
I enjoyed hearing skipper calling out engine commands, "Astern! Ahead!" and seeing the engineer executing them with a little bit of guidance where necessary.

Re: Sliding Steam Whistle (Mocking Bird Whistle)
I think for a whistle blow event, you really should have at least 1 isolation valve for each whistle on the manifold. If you run such an event, the organizers can't really know if the whistles people are bringing are in good working order. Once a long time ago I fired up my old boiler on land with a...

One idea for a display - any device that can be programmed and has I2C or QWIC can be hooked up to one of these 4 character hex-segment displays that sparkfun sells for less then $10: They can be daisy chained if you want more characters: Green https://www.sparkfun.com/products/18566 White https://w...

Re: Sliding Steam Whistle (Steam Flute?)
The official term for that is a "mockingbird" whistle. Thank you, I did not know the name! Knowing the correct name, youtube gave me another video of a Mocking Bird whistle at a Whistle Blow event from 2013. This mockingbird whistle might have been used for a fire department to wake up the fire fig...
