absolutely, if you do not have a wet leg then you must create an airspace and/or insulation prior to wood.

I myself and many other steamers I know with a water lef on their boiler hve no insulation, I am in my third year of operation with mahogany staving and no insulation and it has been absolutely fine. I believe all or most of Rappahanock boatworks builds have direct wood over boiler as well

Elliot Bay Boatworks used to seel spun brass stack caps and smokehoods but not sure if they still have them....they are on the website still

Wendell, try closing the water supply off, turn steam valve on all the way and then quickly open water valve but with control, just to try to get it to grab, maybe it is too flooded if that can actually happen?....I have done this with some to "trick" the injector persay, however I have to say mine ...

If you have any room whatsoever under the decks I would put a tiller arm and go hydraulic, it is the best thing since sliced bread as someone else told me and they were correct.

No rush, hopefully everything is ok with your wife. We had a successful hydro this past weekend and everything is back together, dad is up in Maine playing trains so maybe will be at Nockamixon sometime in the first week of May.

I usually just pump it out with a hand pump and squirt directly into roaring fire
