Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

I'm REALLY looking forward to hearing your performance tests. Right now I have an 18 x 24 with great big elephant ear blades. Enough blade area for a 100 hp gas engine I'm sure. I've heard of cutting down a prop like mine to look like your new one but am far too cowardly to just jump into it.

Re: How to Refinish Worn Gelcoat

Having fought the whole Gel Coat issue to a standstill over thirty years of sailboat ownership, I have some observations. In order: A: Try buffing first. There are several grades of buffing compound and I have been repeatedly surprised at how well this method can work. It is the cheapest and does th...

Re: Potential Steamboats Queen Mary Lifeboats

I've had a small bit of experience with trying to make something out of a steel lifeboat hull. It didn't turn out well. The boat was free so I just chalked it all up as a learning episode. I didn't understand that these boats are not intended to go anywhere at all. Just hang out, wait for rescue and...

Re: A Funny Looking Slide Valve

Interesting that there are still engines still being built with slide valves. I suppose we have Stuart Turner to thank for that.

~1840 to 2022. Over an 180 year run. Not bad.

I'm reminded of the cry of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. "Tradition!!!"

Re: Better Piston Rings

Every time I hear mention of frictional losses I think about all of the slide valve engines I've owned that had no valve balance at all. The 5A among them, of course. It would be nice to know approximately the friction budget of our launch engines. Given the wear and breakage issues of many such val...

Re: Better Piston Rings

Sorry. I missed that this wasn't an active construction project.

That said, using anything but cast iron in this application is just asking for trouble. In my humble opinion (snorting in the background from my wife).
