Re: Olfelt
Dick was saying on his small boat, the Andante, he would shut the steam off to the engine once in a while to see where the water really was since it was always at the top OR above the glass when running. The 40sq ft in my boat now doesn't raise the water at all under load, just expansion as it gets ...

Re: Olfelt
I've been following your trials and tribulations also; good job. I'm using a Lune Valley type burner so there is a "hole " in the centre of the fire, maybe a shield is in order. But I've moved the sight glass standpipe to the outside of the sheet metal and the reading is a lot more stable, BUT origi...

Re: Olfelt
NAKED pix, well the boiler is. It works! Running my American Blower Company 3 1/4 X 3 worn old motor. Only issue is two problems with the sight glass, 1) water VERY unstable, there is a still pipe under the sheetmetal that has a metal deflector around it but I think it's boiling the water still, so ...

GRINDING through the site Bard sent me.... probably just to FRY what little little gray cells are left, thanks... I think. Yup around 3gph runs my 3X4X5 worn engine along at flank speed; 6ish MPH according to Steve's cell phone; we've got a cabin AND a canopy; windage IS really an issue. But hull sp...

Re: Taylor engine castings
just as a footnote Watt leased (not sold) his engines on the number of horses it REPLACED, not the "horsepower" an engine produced. Since the mines had to be kept clear of water 24 hours a day the horses ( which ran the pumps) had to be used in shifts. So indeed you may have needed only one or two h...

Re: Olfelt
Boiler doneish, now getting to firebox. MORE questions; I've been taking combustion air from the ashpit door on the original boiler with a baffle to keep it from blowing against the flame and pushing it to one side. So I was thinking about having a series of holes in the side of the firebox, maybe 6...

Re: Using TSP as boiler cleaner
I dump a bit into the Stanley condenser before a run that way it gets washed into the water tank while running, oil IS a problem in those boilers. I don't in the boat, but I hardly lube the motor. BUT here in California we now can only get NON phosphate, trisodium eer phosphate, I've got no Idea if ...

Re: Nyitra I
My 2 cents;1/2 penberthy fills boiler QUICKLY, I usually use it when berthing for next start up, Hypro pumps for normal running, through a feed water heater I don't see a drop in pressure when it's delivering. I HAVE a hand pump but never use it, not needed so far. Lube; I use 90/150 ( or something)...
