Re: Olfelt

castable ordered; my original firebox is cement of some sort and is almost 40 years old and is in fine shape. Just trying to cool things down in the cockpit, possibly fibrefax BETWEEN sheetmetal outer wall and refractory lining? rp

Re: Olfelt

Back at it, a cruise down the Petaluma river, fibreglassed the interior of my water tank and rationalized some under floor plumbing, now doneish with boiler. Finished last big welds yesterday, the hottest day this year!, and pressure tested it this AM. Some plumbing oozes, of which all but one were ...

Lune Valley burner

Moving along on boiler, but here is some news on a Lune Valley style burner I've been FIGHTING for the last few years; When I got the boat it had a Lune Valley type WITHOUT an adjustable metering needle, and it did work fine for a while.... but something changed. I'm thinking that the diesel fuel ha...

Re: Steam and sails

Read the book " The Steam Coffin" about the first atlantic steamship crossing, the Great Eastern had masts, and what about "sailing" the Eppelton Hall across the Atlantic. Lots of early steamships had aux sails; they couldn't carry enough fuel ( at 3 or 4 psi boiler pressure) go go anywhere! The ear...

Re: A puzzle to entertain your vacation for a moment or two

SOMEWHERE along the way I read of a fellow drilling a SMALL hole through the back side of the stub axles, connecting a nylon flex line to that and thence to a REGULATED air source, ie a small tank on the trailer. When launching he would pressurize the bearing housings with the air, only a pound or s...

Re: Olfelt

I'll probably leave the old boiler in untill after the B&W meet and will swap out during the winter. Hopefully will have the boiler done in another month or ...

Re: Glands- Any improvements?

What REALLY works on Stanley's is hard chromed and ground rods and valve stems, maybe a bit pricey but only done once! It's ten years since I repacked with graphite packing and still good!! Be aware in the car world the packing is NOT just wrapped around the shaft; it is a series of stacked rings, e...

Re: Olfelt

Next query; starting on the top end of the boiler, any thoughts as to amount of steam storage space above the tubes. In my case I have the center tube end about an inch above the tubes and a section of tube to be welded to that; just for a reservoir. Now in a Stanley you need a LOT, but a boat, not ...

Re: Boiler stack performance vs. relative humidity & dew poi

I can't really tell from the pic of the Princess on the side but I looked up my copy of Live Steam, Feb '85 and on the cover photo of the boat it SEEMS the stack is quite a bit taller. Maybe just the angle of the photo or has the stack been shortened? rp
