Re: Building Pumps
Fred, I like it, good design and machining/welding. A little overkill perhaps - but it may look appropriate for you boat. Incidentally if you any of you folks are members of the International Steamboat Society - their Mar/Apr 2015 Issue of the Steamboating Magazine Vol. XiX, No. 2 was all about feed...

Re: Where to buy pressure gauges in the UK?
Any pressure gauge that has the range you want should work just fine as long you use a steam siphon below it inline. Sometimes I have seen a cut off valve inline, in case something with the gauge breaks. Might not be a bad idea for an antique gauge. Other then that it's mostly aesthetics and mountin...

Re: So Fred doesn't have the only side wheeler.
The Waverley is the only remaining steam side wheeler that really regularly actually goes on an ocean with passengers. She has been featured in major movie for a few minutes - can't remember which - one of the new Sherlock Holmes movies? So many good videos of the Waverly online.... This video strik...

Re: A Salute to the Deck ...
I remember seeing an event on Chautauqua Lake, New York State between the Chautaqua Belle steam paddle wheeler - 100ft+ length and a stupid jetski/personal watercraft. The jetski stalled 20-30 feet right in front of the path of the Belle. I think the Belle goes about 6knots or so. There was really n...

Re: A Salute to the Deck ...
Some of this discussion made me chuckle. Even though I had taken a boater safety courses 15+ years ago, and had driven a g a s o l i n e motor boat (both two 2 stroke, 4 stroke) in New York State, and in Alaska - and sailed, paddled canoes in Canada, Kayaks, Sunfish, Catamaran etc - the State of Ohi...

Re: Burning Liquid Fuels
I kind of like the kerosene smell, am I weird? Not in my book. Even though my launch won't be liquid fueled - a lot of oils have strong memories for different people. Black Cat, White Cat the movie 1998 (no steam, not in English) - has a hilarious scene early in the movie - Some Russians sold water...

Re: Burning Liquid Fuels
A well established alternative is a steam atomized oil burner, in use for at least 100 years. Simple enough, although a kinundrum of sorts as steam is needed to operate the burner, and without a burner, no steam! So an alternate method of getting up steam on startup is needed. You just need another...

Re: 1902 Steam Car Engine vs Mike Brown Engine - HP disparit
Google "Steam Bike" the poster is "AuraEng" I couldn't find it - link? This which just happened in the last year is incredible if you are into steam bikes: http://ecta-lsr.net/?p=2327 The only reasonable explanation is the steam car (at periods of operation) was putting out a lot more hp than it wa...

Re: 1902 Steam Car Engine vs Mike Brown Engine - HP disparit
A buddy of mine uses a Strelinger PM Research coke bottle engine on a steambike. That engine is rated at 1/4 hp. With the pressures and RPM he's running it (with modifications) we ran the PLAN formula and it is actually putting out over 3hp. Quite a difference from it's ratings. ... The little Stre...

Re: 1902 Steam Car Engine vs Mike Brown Engine - HP disparit
I do know that the Steam Traction Community shows will some times have a Prony Brake - they do it by belt from the flywheel/pulley. As was mentioned it is not all that hard for a traction engine to significantly exceed it's original as sold HP rating. However it is considerably harder/impossible for...
