Re: Ball Bearings

Great! The bearings have arrived, much earlier than expected. :D :D

Re: And Now for the Twin

Wesley, I hear you about between centres, and if any further machining had been required at that stage that would have been the way to go, but it would have made adjustment difficult with nothing to push against (chuck). Doing it between chuck and centre, pushing a centre into the end of the hanging...

Re: And Now for the Twin

Thanks guys!

I'm constantly amazed by the interest this is generating, the number of hits far outweighs the membership of this forum. Hopefully it might set one or two more on the right (steam) path. It would certainly be nice to think so.

Re: And Now for the Twin

The next section main shaft was checked before final assembly in the lathe gripping the web in the outside jaws. Over the whole exercise I changed jaws back and forth so often that I resorted to the De-walt battery drill - and flattened the battery! :? Crankshaft (35) (600 x 450).jpg Aligned with th...

Re: And Now for the Twin

With the crank pin pressed in (no 'keyed'), I returned it to the lathe for checking and correcting. Crankshaft (31) (600 x 450).jpg Crankshaft (32) (600 x 450).jpg I then discovered that it was too close to the main shaft to clear the drill chuck. Crankshaft (34) (600 x 450).jpg Some guys say...

Re: Removing boiler tubes

One thought has to be that the copper sleeve will expand both inwards and outwards so possibly tightens the seal?

Ball Bearings

I have used s/f/l ball races for my crank and big-ends and am now wondering if they could be used for the eccentrics as well. Anyone had experience of that use? I've found a s/f/l @ 65mm O.D. and 7mm width which seems might be suitable if the I.D of 50mm isn't too small. Not particularly cheap, but ...

Re: And Now for the Twin

Thanks Russ, I'd like to say it's all plain sailing (pun), but I had a hiccough this afternoon. I was drilling and tapping some of the screw-keys. I think it might have been Fred, on here, who called them "Po' boy keys". Very apt! Crankshaft (26) (600 x 450).jpg and suddenly found that the shaft wou...

Re: And Now for the Twin

Set the D.T.I to zero at Jaw No 1 Crankshaft (22) (600 x 450).jpg Rotate by hand and check the run-out as you turn. Mine is worst on N0 2 jaw, note 0.0015". This will be checked again at each intermediate stage as the chuck may not settle at exactly the same reading next time. The run-out here will ...
