Re: Suitable Boiler for a LocoMobile Twin Simple (6hp)
Jon, Steam is like anything else, it is safe as it is handled. Most everyone drives around with 20+ gallons of volatile fuel under vehicles, some have Propane tanks in their yards that hold 3-400 gallons of compressed LP and 250 psi working pressure, 5 gallon propane cylinders right outside our door...

Re: Suitable Boiler for a LocoMobile Twin Simple (6hp)
Jon, Here is the book for hobby steamboating. http://www.steamlaunch.com/books/modernbt.html There are some used copies around, which I bought first, then after much reading fell apart. Best to buy a new one, which is what I wound up doing. I would also add on the boiler question, being a new steamb...

Schedule 80 pipe?
I recently suggested someone use schedule 80 pipe on the main steamline, and any piping carrying boiler pressure on our small steamboat applications. And received a reply that if it's not over a 250 psi system, that schedule 40 is ample and purchasing sch 80 is just wasting money. Also "All iron pip...

Re: DetroiTug's Tug is going together
The new valves definitely did the trick on the economizer. Took her out about a week ago and that is the best it ever ran. We made a nice 40 mile trip up the Detroit River. We ran in between 50 - 60 psi most of the day. Learned more about firing it which is making even more improvement. The draft in...

Re: steel cylinder?
Scott, Sorry for the slow reply on your inquiry about a casting set. I have not talked to him since the day I posted the pics. I've been urging him to get the kit ready as I'm sure he'd sell some of them. We talk one time about machining the cam from a solid model in a 4th axis CNC setup, then the n...

Re: steel cylinder?
Cast Iron is also porous like a powder bronze bearing, which will store oil and emit it on the mating surfaces as the temperature rises and thins it. Ray Hasbrouck undoubtedly tried the no sleeve route, but his larger weldment engine design called for one. My guess without it, the engine would need ...

Re: steel cylinder?
Hi Bart, The design considerations you've outlined are coincidentally similar to the design a buddy of mine is working on. He made some of the parts here in my shop. This automobile twin Uniflow is 3+3X4. It is all aluminum construction of his own design. The sleeves are 303 stainless tube. The ring...

Re: Tverskoy-Pasechnik Rotary Steam Engine
Why would the internal profiles need to be ground? Not sure what type of CNC machine is being contemplated for the manufacture, but double-digit micron tolerance on some of the best machines available would be nearly impossible to hold. 20 microns is equivalent to .0007". Holding that with Arc inter...

Re: Tverskoy-Pasechnik Rotary Steam Engine
Interesting design in 2D. Just an opinion... In practice, sealing surfaces would be difficult to achieve and nearly impossible to maintain to result in any sort of stable performance. Even small clearances would add up to large areas of blow-by. These clearances would change with temperature. The in...

Wish I was in closer proximity to these larger meets. I may try to make it over to one of the Lee's Mills or Lake Nockamixon meets next year.
