Re: digital steam engine indicator

Little update: Since the cheap pressure transducer I've been using so far leaves much to be desired and makes the indicator useful for very low rpms only, I am now trying to get my hands on a better pressure sensor - hopefully one used as a combined sparkplug-sensor-design for internal combustion en...

Re: And Now for the Twin

Well, literally everything on this forum is encouraging and inspirational, it's a delight. It reminds me of building my second lathe after moving to the Wadden Sea.
Your engine will be amazing to look at, that's already a safe bet.

Re: Best rpm for plunger pumps?

I thought I was smart and I'd just use one pump for the condenser and the feed pump, but I forgot the condenser pump doesn't deliver 100% liquid water. And the piston area for a vacuum pump would kill the mechanisms if I want to use them against the full boiler pressure. There are so many variables,...

Re: Best rpm for plunger pumps?

This information will get me very far. Is there a valve type better suited to obtain a low opening pressure loss? I blueprinting an engine that keeps me capable to experiment with both exhaust modes - exhaust into the atmosphere and into a condenser. That could well mean an absolute pressure of 0.1 ...

Best rpm for plunger pumps?

Yello, I've been brainstorming about buying a pump from ebay or building one from brass fittings. I can't decide yet, but I'd actually like to build one for the experience. I have books about model steam engines and it says a plunger pump shouldn't run higher than some 500 rpm, otherwise the valves ...

Re: Steam Whistle for a (my) steam boat

The picture with the Christmas windmill (I forgot the german name for it despite being german - Weihnachtsmühle or Weihnachtsrad?) is obligatory :)

Anyways, I really like the way you work. You have a very clean, systematic and precise way to build things.

Re: Theory question: Pressure/temperature limits

I find it really important to consider safety as we're doing here. There are so many people out there using angle grinders without ear protection, weld while looking away and so much more. I can sound so much like an exaggeration, but we have only one set of organs and some maybe already having a li...

Re: IS there any intel about the Dodge steam speed boat?

Oh yes. one of them is now named the SS Delphine I think and it has been restored and is looking as shiny and luxurious as the art deco era ever was. To my knowledge, they were the only private users of a quadruple-expansion steam engine (I have to correct myself. There are in fact quadruple launch ...

IS there any intel about the Dodge steam speed boat?

Yello, I recently came across this gritty picture labeled "Dodge Brothers' steam powered racing boat" on pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/573927546233410162/ If it is indeed a steam-powered speed boat, it is a very sleek implementation. There's no prominent smoke stack one would associate wi...
