Re: How to Prepare Steamboat for Heated Winter Storage

Even in California we have places that lose power in the depths of winter and see temps in the -20°F (yes farenheight... That's like -10,000°C or so, right?). We plumbed our boats with draining in mind and put drain valves in the low spots where possible. Draining the entire system is a year-end rig...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website

Isn't the biggest draw of a monotube boiler the fact that conventionally it contains only a small amount of superheated water at any particular moment, and so the damage due to a rupture is less likely to be catastrophic? Would a water level/steam separator drum remove that advantage? There is that...

Re: Steam engine from the North Caucasus

Ingvar, Congratulations on your great progress! I would think that the volume of the HP cylinder would be adequate for the receiver pipe, especially since you have a bit more volume in the LP valve chest as well. A long as there's adequate volume for the LP to get filled and not starved every time t...

The Great California Delta Steamboat Meet

It's that time of year again! The 47th annual Great Delta Steamboat Meet will be held at the traditional venue September 22nd-26th. (Not 48th because of 2020 being cancelled due to COVID) Saturday includes a picnic run to Terminus, swap meet at the host marina upon return from the picnic, and a potl...

Re: Not Something You See Every Day

That's great! I tried doing that with my launch with a buddy on a short surfboard... My boat would get him up, but then he'd sink down and just get dragged. The monotube had the initial oomf to do it, but not the capacity to sustain it while the burner caught up. Downside of mechanical automatic con...

Re: Goodbye to Mike Rometer

Hi Pete,

It really is a shame to lose someone like him, for his family, friends, and the community as a whole. He, and his posts, will be missed.

I hope his work will inspire someone else someday and his unfinished works will be completed in a manor that honours his wishes and his memory.

Re: Lake Tahoe Steam Launch

Hi Mike,

That looks like it was taken in Tahoe city. Engine looks like maybe a navy B or G judging by the LP valve chest cover...

Unfortunately many of the folks up here that may have known that launch have passed relatively recently. I'll give a try at asking around.
