Re: Design Error on Leak compound Edwards Air Pump?
Didn't intend to confuse, Mal; take out 'plate'. The rubber disc is between valve and valve plate. Rubber was also used in full size practice as were thin brass discs. On full size marine plant and the small machines we use temperature of feed water had/has a considerable effect on steam raising. Wa...

Re: Design Error on Leak compound Edwards Air Pump?
An Edwards air pump is single acting and the coned end of the piston descends into the coned bottom cover displacing the water at high velocity around the piston through ports cast in the cylinder wall. The water, having insufficient time to run back, is moved away to the valve plate which is below ...

Re: The big brown truck just made a visit
sounds like a disc grinder, also available in 4" (a Makita is a lovely machine for delicate work), 5" and 9" and larger if you are brave.

Re: steam exhaust silencer
Shamrock has a silencer, water from any steam that condenses keeps the ash pan damp and the rest goes up the funnel to encourage the fire.

Re: What kind of First Aid Kit do have on your launch?
Most used on my boat has been a non flamable freezing spray which has proved very good for taking the heat out of steam and hot surface burns. Also carried is a zinc based anti sceptic ointment for application to the occasional cut which is then covered with a very sticky plaster. Except for paracet...

Re: Bottom prep advise on Steel Hulled Steamboat
Do you have access to an ultrasonic thickness tester? They can help give an overall view of condition Corrosion is sometimes very localised on steel hulls. One boat owner I know resorts to using the heads of 6" wire nails as rivets to plug small holes whilst the larger are filled by inserting patche...

Re: A new ASME code boiler for a Steam Launch
I agree with Ron, use a single ash pan door hole with a door that can be closed in stages to control draft and which allows you to get a decent sized shovel in to lift the ash out. A rake can then be used to clear the corners. Its a good idea to either let some condensate drip into the ash pan (if i...

Re: Where to get boiler washout plugs
Four new bronze plugs were made by Martyn Blackburn a couple of weeks ago for Shamrock to replace the old which were well chewed and may well have dated from 1927. Martyn made them a nice long taper with as large a square head as could be got from the stock and a pair of new keys were made for getti...

Re: Water hammer
I once encountered hammering on a Stuart 6a when compression on the HP raised the pressure sufficiently to lift the slide valve. The only other thing I can think of is condensate building up and being carried over, that will make things smack a bit.
