Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

Thank you for your answer. I quess it really shows up eventually if you buy cheap tools. As a student, I was only able to buy a relatively cheap drill press, whose drill table bends down under very little pressure. Now, I just use a short length of a very big suspender as a table and it works better...

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

After finally having some time (besides legal fights with criminal troublemakers that is) and binge-watching Jay Leno, I'm still trying to figure out how I construct the intake manifold. I intend to split the cylinder liner into 2 parts which are obviously axially alligned and end on the opposing en...

Re: digital steam engine indicator

Exactly. I think an encoder would do the trick. I am still not sure how an reluctor works, but if it is the ignition timer thing I had in my car, I suspect it would be usable for rpm messuring, but not for a good diagram - at least as far as I understand magnetic reluctors. But rotary encoders seem ...

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

I am currently fidling with different pieces of steel trying to figure out a way to attach the bearing end plates to the crank case tunnel. Does anyone have a good idea to do so? This is what I originally intended: https://i.postimg.cc/0jt63GkL/image.jpg (The piece of metal I used as the table is go...

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

After the input of using a one-piece crankcase, I got trapped by the idea enough to just try it out. I feared the neccessity of entirely going overboard with the dimensioning of the crankcase, but actually, even the material I originally intended to use was just big enough for the crankshafts to be ...

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

The idea with the one-piece crankcase definitely sounds like the sturdier solution. The only problem is that the crankshafts I am using have one-piece con rods, which I couldn't detach from the crankshaft. (Maybe that is why you are suggesting a bigger size of the crankcase - to have enough space to...

I know I would love to have one. Especially something mated with a user-friendly (read near-luddite) graphing software.
Well, we are sitting in the same boat there:) I ALWAYS wanted to evade IT stuff. Now, am sitting next to an arduino:)

Re: digital steam engine indicator

Your considerations made me look deeper into the rotary encoder and it looks very well. I was more inclined to a linear solution to reduce the programming, but maybe I could try the rotary solution. It both has pro's and con's. A linear sensor could automatically determine the piston stroke and does...

Re: Opposed Piston Engine Project - The Steam Version

I will definitely show many pictures here. I promise you that :) Now, I tested the PWM module with the washing machine motor for my lathe and everything is working as hoped. So, I can get busy, soon. Actually, I pondered about the lubrication issue a lot. The bottom crankcase won't be any problem wi...

Re: digital steam engine indicator

I was originally not so much into this indicator and just had an idea to give, but I found myself caught by it. Now, I am communicating on some arduino forums for its realizability. I actually found a way to messure the piston position. There are linear position sensors for cnc mills and lathes. The...
