The Stuart D10 is a nice little engine, and 600 Eu is a fair asking price, but it has a bore and stroke of 19mm. Best suited to model boats 1 to 1.5 metres long.

Re: T goodhand boiler maker in Kent

There's no point in trying to 2nd guess the boiler inspectors on something like this, and it is a tricky judgement call. The boiler may stand a hydraulic test to 160 psi this week, but it might fail catastrophically at 170 psi, and long term corrosion cracking may be invisible, but cause catastrophi...

Re: T goodhand boiler maker in Kent

Boiler-making for small vessels, and for traction engines etc. involves a very small community, and on that basis it would have been worth contacting Chatham Steam Ltd, The boiler yard, Detling Aerodrome ind. est.,Detling, Kent. Unfortunately, Chatham Steam went bankrupt a year or two ago, but all t...

Re: Any german steam boat captains reachable?

The Steam Boat Association of Great Britain (usually shortened to "The SBA") lists 13 members in Germany; association rules do not allow publication of members names and addresses, but the SBA Register lists over 20 steamboats in the country, and has free access. The SBA website is at: https://www.s...

Re: Boiler Repairs

I don't know anyone directly who repairs boilers in Scotland, but I'm pretty sure Kevin Slater, our current SBA chairman and owner of Steamwell Boilers (near Gloucester) will know if there is anyone. The advantage of asking Kevin is that being in the business himself, he knows who does a good job at...

Re: Modern History

Stitch and glue construction. I used expensive plywood but I seriously doubt that box store crud or MDO sign board would compromise the integrity of the hull. Glass cloth and epoxy resin on all surfaces. The plywood is just a core of a sandwich panel. Balsa or foam would probably do as well with ca...

Re: Oil burner consumption

My boat uses about 10 litres of kerosene in a day's steaming. 20' boat, around 3000lb displacement, Stuart 6A engine and a 3-drum water-tube boiler with feed preheater.

Re: chelmer river uk how do I get on it?

My posting above was done in a bit of a hurry, but for Colin and others, I can add a bit more. The first thing to say is that there is not much fresh water available for steaming in Essex and virtually none in Suffolk, although quite a lot in Norfolk - at a hefty toll from the Broads Authority. In f...

Re: chelmer river uk how do I get on it?

There appears to be a slip behind the Paper Mill Lock Tea Rooms at Little Baddow, but whether it is just private you'd need to investigate. By agreement with the proprietor of the Old Stables Tea Room. Use of the slipway should be booked through Sarah Phillips, Administration Assistant based at Pap...

Re: Fuel oil preferences

I would like to support Fred's comments on commercial high-pressure atomising burners used with Kerosene or heating fuel. They work very nicely, whereas a lot of home-made steamboat burners don't. A vapourising burner with pre-heat from denatured alcohol is an option, or at least was an option when ...
