Re: Greetings from Strasburg, PA, USA
Hi Steve, welcome to the forum and thanks for posting - a very nice hull and a good size too. How long has it taken? In due course, please do post some pics of boring for the stern tube as this is a tricky part of building a boat for most of us. Looks as though your designer has been clever and draw...

Re: New Steam Tug
What a wonderful and unusual boat - you need to tell us more about her.
So let me guess- did tunnel tugs pull boats through the canal tunnels?

Re: Boiler Materials
Pete, I have a funnel in progress for my 20ft boat, which is made much as Daniel describes. (Click thumbnail to open) http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad134/Johnlanark/Boiler%20Building/th_Funnelpartmade.jpg The inner funnel is standard 6" stainless flue pipe - there are two pieces but the joint i...

Re: DetroiTug's Tug is going together
Well done Ron, you only started this thread last March and you have a wonderful boat going already - puts some of us to shame. She looks great - I'm sure you will soon sort the small niggles and have years of fun. Regards, John

Re: Building the Diana/Dawn class
Hi Mike I can't really help but rather than leave this enquiry unanswered I remember there was a build series in "Engineering in Miniature" many years ago. If you ask on a model engineering forum someone may have a copy. http://www.homeworkshop.org.uk/ Good luck, John

Welcome to the forum. Ask away on any questions, there is lots of knowledge among the members.
The planning stage is almost as much fun as boat ownership, and a lot cheaper. John

Re: Building a Three Drum Watertube Boiler
Progress on the boiler- all by Calum Somerville, none by me. Door and frame made, mud drums welded in, starter tube and flange for the outer funnel, removable side panels for access to tubes, and a handrail added on the port side. Channel section mounting welded on. The end panel at the door end has...

Re: What happens when it breaks!
Good for you - I hope you go for it. To help a newcover get started on a big build, I can recommend the 5 day courses at the Boatbuilding Academy in Lyme Regis. They have one on modern wooden boat building that will cover strip plank, and will solve many mysteries. John

Re: What happens when it breaks!
Building a 25 ft seagoing boat would be a huge undertaking that would take several years - I would suggest hunting down a suitable vintage hull while you build the plant. John

Re: Building a Three Drum Watertube Boiler
Wonderful boilers, Midship, thanks for the photos! My own folded ashpan did not work. It would not fold up properly to the underside of the base without distorting. However a reference from a friend has introduced me to Calum Sommerville, who has a steel and woodwork heritage fabrication business ht...
