Re: Carrying a steam ship across Africa

Interesting. I never knew that. Is the film based on a book? I would love to read more about that story. Yes it was! The African Queen was written in 1935 by CS Forester. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_African_Queen_(novel) And interestingly, you can take a ride on her today if you ever find you...

Re: Interesting Regenerative Firebox Design

I can't speak to everything, but: A: The back of my envelope says that with a diesel burner, a 150 degree F temperature increase of the incoming air would result in a roughly 2% decrease in fuel consumption. With that said, that's assuming a perfectly stoichiometric mixture so it would probably be a...

Interesting Regenerative Firebox Design

I saw this design for a regenerative hearth design drawn up by a blacksmith on Reddit https://i.imgur.com/3ZfpmIu.jpg and I think it would have a lot of interesting possibilities as a firebox, especially under forced draft. The addition of the integrated heat exchanger for combustion air preheat see...

Re: Antidote to Cabin Fever?

"Would there be enough clearance for a 12x12 prop?" The software I have indicated the 12 x 12 prop (300mm x 300mm) at 500 RPM as approximately ideal, but the actual hull configuration is much more suited to a 9 or 10 inch (225 - 250mm) prop diameter, about 80% of the ideal diameter. No big sacrific...

Re: How are you fairing?

We're doing OK here in central Oklahoma. We haven't been hit too hard yet, and people are taking social distancing generally seriously.

My fiancee and I also just bought our first home, so I've been plenty busy chewing through the honey-do list.

Re: Quad versus twin compound

Exhausting up the stack should be done with a nozzle to increase velocity, the little steam cars did that to maximize the effectiveness. Traction engines and locomotives did this as well. How big? What shape? I think only R&D would answer that. Ron I believe that in locomitives, the most effective ...

Re: Quad versus twin compound

I took the stock turbochager off my '87 Buick Grand National in the pursuit of more speed and more frequent tire replacements... We put it on my father's launch "George H. Sandin" initially as forced draught. It worked so incredibly well. You have to have very good sealing around the door, lagging,...
