Re: Engine color
Many engines - stationary and otherwise - painted the lower part of the engine (from the bottom of the cylinder heads to the drip pan) a light color, about the color of "whipped cream", is very nice for: finding parts, visualizing oil leaks, etc. Then with a maroon or green paintfor the exterior a n...

Re: steam exhaust silencer
Do you have any info on the poppet valve in the drawing: is it a manufactured item; where did you get any parts, etc. I have a Westinghouse compressor for a small truck air brake system. Three cylinder, excellent design, would make a great uniflo engine - just can't use a sliding valve like one coul...

Re: How many of us ARE there?
It would be a fairly simple task to great a site that pulled together a number of other databases, if there was for instance 4-5 clubs with databases like the SBA one. Daniel Suggest you take a look at the Northwest Stean Society http://www.northweststeamsociety.org by selecting the "boats &c" butt...

Re: How many of us ARE there?
It would be good if there was a global register, but as said, it somewhat relies on members coming forwards. Daniel In 1991 the International Steamboat Society put together, copyrighted and printed a comprehensive Steamboat Directory listing 133 boats (mostly US) that were around. It has been updat...

Re: New from near Hamburg / Germany
PS: Why the small world will meet here? It's a very, very, small world. And you'll find a lot of information here, presented in a very casual format. Steamboaters in Germany are fortunate to have an active and knowledgeable group in the German Steamboat Society. Rainier (among others) can get you s...

Re: Very large Ashcroft gauge for sale, Colorado
If you're going to use a gauge, particularly on a boiler, have it calibrated by a professional company. Most of the larger, but local, pipe and valve supply houses do it or know someone who does. These firms are certified (for boiler inspections) and will also identify any potential problems. Last t...

Re: 2014 Great Delta Steamboat Meet
Carol Ann's engine is a mate to Bob Dessert's: T. Patchet compound, 3.25" + 5.625" x 5", 12 IHP at 380 RPM, built in 1882 - one of, I believe, four made for the Exposition's water taxis.

Re: Boiler advice
 You have a good, relatively local knowledge base in the Steam Boat Association of Australia, http://www.steamboat.com.au . They put out a quarterly publication, the Steam Leak which is in color and contains good info. Finding and maintaining a good "reference people" data base is the most imp...

Re: Frances-Anne
One item I have used in years gone by to keep birds from using any boat I owned as a loo is to mount a fairly accurate (color, size, etc) three dimensional image of an owl somewhere on/near the boat. Doesn't always work, but might be better than nothing.
